Clarification on Carbon Values and Units in InVEST Carbon Storage Model Output

Dear team,

I have run the InVEST Carbon Storage and Sequestration model using a LULC map derived from Sentinel-2 imagery at 10 m resolution. The model generated a raster output showing carbon values ranging from 0 to 2.641, with the highest values corresponding to dense natural forest areas. However, this value seems unusually low, as one would typically expect much higher carbon storage in such ecosystems.

Additionally, the output raster lacks an attribute table, does not display carbon values by land cover class, and the unit of measurement for the carbon values is unclear.

Could you please confirm whether the output carbon values are expressed in t/ha or t/pixel? If they are per pixel (10 m × 10 m), the low values may be reasonable.

Thank you for your support.

Hi @joanabana ,

Thanks for writing in with your question. Which version of InVEST did you run?

Please search this forum for similar posts, such as this one, to find your answers. We recently updated this model, changing raster results from tons/pixel to tons/hectare, so the answer depends on which version you used. Always refer to the InVEST User Guide for clarity on units of measurement and all model details.

The results are directly derived from the values users enter in the Carbon Pools input CSV table, so if the resulting values seem low, you should review the parameters you entered. Are you differentiating densities between the different pools?

Dear JesseG,

Thank you very much for your prompt response and guidance.

Following your advice, I uninstalled the older version of InVEST and then replaced it with the most recent version (Version 3.15.1). However, when I open the new InVEST model, the application window appears completely blank (please see the attached screenshot). Could this be related to specific system requirements or compatibility issues?

Sorry about that, @joanabana . Currently, your computer likely will only be able to run InVEST if no more than one version is installed at a time. Try closing it, uninstall the previous version of the software, and then reopen 3.15.1.
