Urban Cooling: how is building temperature calculated?

Hello,

In the InVEST Urban Cooling User Guide, model outputs include a building_with_stats.shp that includes “mean_t_air,” which is described as the "average temperature value in building (degC). However, nowhere in the User Guide is it explained how this building temperature is calculated. I’m curious as to how this value is calculated (based on my initial exploration of output data, it seems like it might be the same as the surrounding air temperature?).

Thank you!

Hello @CharG ,

The field mean_t_air is the mean T_air.tif value under each building polygon in the buildings vector. Note that our zonal statistics function counts pixels in a binary/boolean fashion rasterized according to Bresenham’s line algorithm, so this will determine whether a pixel is included in the denominator of the mean.

We’ll clarify this a bit better in an upcoming release of InVEST.

Please let us know if you have any other questions!
James
