Clarification on the definition of rain events in the InVEST Seasonal Water Yield module

I am using the Seasonal Water Yield module in the InVEST platform and have a question about the Rain Events Table. The documentation states that a rain event is defined as precipitation greater than 0.1 mm. However, I’m unsure whether this threshold refers to daily precipitation, hourly precipitation, or another time frame. Any insights or clarifications would be greatly appreciated!

Hello @slopez , and welcome to the forums!

In the InVEST Seasonal Water Yield model, the rain events table has a count of the number of rain events per month, where each rain event exceeds 0.1mm. If you take a look at the Rain Events Table section of the Data Needs part of the SWY user’s guide chapter, you’ll see an example table there for your reference.

Hope this helps!
James

Thanks @jdouglass for your reply.
I’d like some clarification regarding the resolution of the data to which I should apply the 0.1 mm threshold. Since the events are counted on a monthly basis, should I derive these counts from an hourly dataset or a daily dataset?
I would count the events each month, but the resolution of the data to which I apply the 0.1 mm threshold will change the number of events counted per month.

That is a really interesting question, and I will have to defer to others who know this model better than I do. @adrianvogl @RafaSchmitt @swolny @jesseG any suggestions here?

@slopez usually we would get them from a daily dataset.
