When running the InVEST model habitat risk assessment, I have come across an issue. For the majority of our trials, we have been able to successfully run the ByRA model and obtain outputs that appear consistent and interpretable. However, during the winter season, we have encountered some unexpected issues with the generated risk surfaces. Specifically, the raster outputs display prominent geometric artifacts, such as strong linear features, triangles, and other unnatural shapes, which do not correspond to ecological expectations.
We would greatly appreciate any guidance or suggestions regarding potential causes of these artifacts and how to resolve them.
Are you running InVEST’s Habitat Risk Assessment model, or are you running the Bycatch Risk Assessment model (which is not a part of InVEST)?
If it’s the latter, I’d suggest writing to the model’s creators to ask about these artifacts. From your screenshot, I’d guess that there may be some geometry simplification going on, but as I have no knowledge of the specific steps the ByRA model is doing, I can only guess.
I needed to check whether an option to simplify polygons was selected when polygonizing the rasters, since that can make some parts look very geometric. it was just a small button I needed to unpress
