I haven’t tried to look for population data specifically for South Africa, but many governments provide census data in some sort of geospatial format, usually by census block or other small administrative unit, but sometimes raster. If anyone knows where to find this for South Africa, please let us know.

If this doesn’t exist for South Africa, there are global datasets of population that you could consider, like WorldPop, GPW and LandScan.
