I have recently encountered some difficulties while using the Habitat Quality model. Specifically, I aim to conduct a habitat quality assessment for multiple global regions from 2000 to 2020. Road network data plays a critical role in influencing habitat quality and cannot be ignored. While OpenStreetMap (OSM) is an excellent data source, it only includes global road network data from 2014 onwards. Data for the period between 2000 and 2010 is scarce and of poor quality.
I would like to inquire whether there is a solution to this issue or if there are any publicly available global road network datasets that I may not be aware of. Thank you very much for your valuable time and guidance.
Hi @JasonLee, I don’t know of a specific dataset for your situation, but you might try searching the NatCap Data Hub to see if you can find any datasets there that would help.
Thank you very much for your help, but whether this website is inaccessible now, I have tried to access this website with scholars from all over the country and have failed.
@JasonLee and anyone else who is looking to access the data hub, the Hub has been online for about a week now. Please do let us know if you run into any difficulties!
@JasonLee Your question about global road network data before 2010 is a great one. We don’t currently have anything like that on the Data Hub, and I’m not aware if any existing datasets. I know some groups have been working to try to develop better road network layers with broader temporal coverage, but the limited availability of high resolution satellite imagery is a challenge. If someone else in the community knows of useful road network data prior to 2014, I hope they’ll share here!
